Nigerian Lawmakers Exchange Blows In Parliament

Nigerian legislators traded blows on the floor of the lower chamber of parliament, the House of Representatives, on Thursday, as tempers flared over the choice of senior officials for the legislature. Proceedings were adjourned and the ceremonial mace taken out of the chamber as supporters of the ruling party’s candidates for the posts trade blows with those opposing. The choice of the two most senior figures in both chambers of parliament, the Senate president and speaker of the House of Representatives, has already been controversial, with lawmakers overruling the All Progressives Congress party’s preferred candidates for the roles.
