Jaguars pick Trevor Lawrence at No. 1. Here is what they’re getting.

SportsPulse: Lorenzo Reyes breaks down how Trevor Lawrence fits with the Jacksonville Jaguars and details his ceiling and floor as a prospect.

What had been expected for months finally became official Thursday night, when the Jacksonville Jaguars used the No. 1 overall selection in the 2021 NFL draft on Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

The 21-year-old Lawrence was the top-rated quarterback in this year’s draft class, a strong group that also includes BYU’s Zach Wilson, Ohio State’s Justin Fields, North Dakota State’s Trey Lance and Alabama’s Mac Jones.

In Lawrence, the Jaguars — who own four of the first 45 selections in this year’s draft — get a cornerstone building block for new head coach Urban Meyer. This is the third time since 2011 that the Jaguars have drafted a quarterback in the first round. Jacksonville certainly hopes Lawrence is the long-term solution at the position that Blake Bortles (No. 3 overall in 2014) and Blaine Gabbert (No. 10 overall in 2011) were not.

Lawrence is the first Clemson player to be selected with the top pick in the NFL draft. Before Lawrence, the highest a Clemson player had ever been selected was fourth overall, and that occurred four times (Banks McFadden in 1940, Gaines Adams in 2007, Sammy Watkins in 2014 and Clelin Ferrell in 2019). Lawrence is also the third Clemson quarterback to be selected in the first round, joining Deshaun Watson (No. 12 overall in 2017) and Steve Fuller (No. 23 overall in 1979).

In three seasons at Clemson, Lawrence passed for 10,098 yards and 90 touchdowns. He went 34-2 as a starter, with both losses coming in the College Football Playoff. On Jan. 7, 2019, Lawrence helped Clemson win the national championship with a resounding 44-17 win over Alabama.

Lawrence opted not to attend the draft in Cleveland, instead choosing to watch the event with friends and family.
